Montgomery County police reported two incidents in the Bethesda-area 2nd District on Tuesday, Aug. 11: all four tires stolen from a parked vehicle and a midday aggravated assault outside businesses on Auburn Avenue.

The tire theft occurred in the 2200 block of Washington Avenue sometime between 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle itself was not taken.

In the 4900 block of Auburn Avenue, two people were involved in a fight outside businesses at approximately 12:06 p.m. Tuesday. Police classified the incident as an aggravated assault. No arrests were reported in connection with either incident, according to the MCPD daily crime summary posted Wednesday.

The incidents follow a weekend that also saw crime in the district. As we reported Tuesday, the Aug. 7–9 period included two attempted burglaries, a vehicle theft and an aggravated assault in the same coverage area.

Vehicle-related crime remains elevated countywide. Montgomery County has seen a 20% increase in auto theft in 2026 compared to 2025, MCPD spokesperson Capt. Cody Fields told Bethesda Magazine in early August. Police have attributed part of the surge to devices that can clone key fobs, though Tuesday's Washington Avenue incident is a parts theft rather than a full vehicle theft.

Across the county on Aug. 11, MCPD also logged a handgun-threat assault in the 1st District, multiple catalytic converter thefts and several auto thefts in other districts.

The daily crime summary does not reflect all calls for service on a given date, MCPD notes.
