Bethesda-Chevy Chase climbed three spots to No. 6 in The MoCo Show's Week 4 Montgomery County football rankings, published Thursday, Sept. 24.
The jump followed B-CC's 14-7 win over Northwest on Sept. 18, the Barons' first victory over the Jaguars since 2010. Senior Aiah Mbayo scored on both sides of the ball, returning an interception 66 yards for a touchdown and punching in the game-winning score on offense.
"I want more after this," Mbayo told The Tattler after B-CC's 50-36 win over Blair on Sept. 10, the victory that started the Barons' current winning streak.
B-CC (2-1) hosts Wheaton on Friday, Sept. 25. A win over Paint Branch the following week would strengthen the Barons' case as the region's top playoff seed, according to The MoCo Show rankings.
Churchill rolls past Whitman
No. 3 Churchill kept its perfect season intact Thursday night, beating Whitman 35-14 at Whitman's home field, according to The MoCo Show's scores page.
The Bulldogs entered the game at 3-0 after dismantling Walter Johnson 35-6 on Sept. 19. Senior quarterback Hunter Humphries completed 13 of 15 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns in that win. Junior linebacker Tommy McHugh added 11 tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss, according to Bethesda Magazine.
Damon Anderson of The MoCo Show had billed the matchup as one that "could very well decide the Congressional Cup" in his Week 4 preview. He predicted Churchill 28, Whitman 7. The Bulldogs matched that 21-point margin while putting up more total points than Anderson expected.
Whitman (2-1 entering the game) had been riding a two-game winning streak. Head coach Patrick Galloway's Vikings beat Wootton 28-14 on Sept. 19, led by junior Caleb Merenstein's 79 rushing yards and two touchdowns, according to The Black and White.
Walter Johnson edges Wootton
Walter Johnson picked up a win Thursday, edging Wootton 13-10. The Wildcats had dropped consecutive games to Quince Orchard and Churchill before the close victory.
Quince Orchard holds the No. 1 spot in the county at 4-0.
What's ahead
B-CC's Friday night game against Wheaton is the next test for the surging Barons. Churchill, now 4-0, carries the area's marquee unbeaten record into Week 5.
