Bethesda-Chevy Chase's varsity field hockey team opened the 2026 season with 14 returning seniors, giving coach Colby Wright a veteran-heavy roster and unfinished business from last fall.

The Barons reached the region finals last season, beating Whitman in an overtime semifinal before falling to Churchill. That run left the program hungry for more, and this year's experienced lineup gives Wright a deep leadership group to build on, the B-CC Tattler reported Sept. 22.

The team has four official captains, only two of whom are seniors. Wright told the Tattler that the distinction hardly matters with this roster. "All of our seniors are leaders on the team, which really help carry everybody and just overall makes the dynamic really really good," she said.

Senior captain Amelia Morton described a team culture built around small rituals: ribbons in their hair before games, a cookie tin passed around afterward and pasta dinners together. Those traditions carry over to the Guck, B-CC's home athletic field, where the Barons host conference opponents.

For first-year varsity junior Emma Schrader, the senior-heavy environment eased her move up from JV. She told the Tattler the upperclassmen had been "showing the way" since preseason. Schrader said she loves this year's group but expects a different feel once the 14 seniors graduate.

Wright echoed that, saying the transition will give rising seniors a chance to step up and take over. For now, her focus stays on the current schedule.

Early results have been mixed. B-CC posted a decisive win over Richard Montgomery and kept the Churchill game close, though no scores have been reported for either contest. The Churchill matchup carried extra weight after last year's region finals loss.

B-CC's schedule on MaxPreps shows an away non-conference game at Urbana on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m.
