The Lilly Pulitzer store at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda is closed for a renovation and is expected to reopen before the end of the year.

No specific reopening date has been announced. How much of the holiday shopping season the boutique at 7101 Democracy Blvd. will catch remains an open question for shoppers. Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer first reported the closure on Sept. 12 and confirmed the renovation on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Dyer noted that the store's windows are covered with black trash-bag material rather than branded construction screens during the work.

The renovation comes as Lilly Pulitzer's parent company, Oxford Industries Inc., navigates a difficult stretch for the brand. During a Sept. 3 earnings call, Oxford Industries Chairman and CEO Tom Chubb said performance at Lilly Pulitzer "remained weak in the second quarter." He blamed a pricing misstep, saying the company had moved too much inventory away from entry-level price points into higher ones.

Oxford Industries, an Atlanta-based company, also owns Tommy Bahama, Johnny Was and Southern Tide. Chubb told investors the company is reshaping its store fleet, converting some Southern Tide and Johnny Was locations to Lilly Pulitzer stores where the market fits better. He said spring 2027 would be the first season Oxford can substantially reshape the brand's full assortment, according to an earnings call transcript published by The Globe and Mail.

The earnings call did not reference the Bethesda store specifically.

Oxford also lowered its full-year fiscal 2026 sales guidance to between $1.43 billion and $1.47 billion, citing persistent weakness at Lilly Pulitzer and broader pressure on consumer spending.

Neither Lilly Pulitzer, Oxford Industries nor Westfield Montgomery Mall management has made a public statement about the Bethesda renovation. No permit filings or mall announcements confirming the project were located in public records.

Shoppers looking for a timeline will have to wait. The only public indication so far is that the store plans to reopen before year-end.
