A husband-and-wife team is opening a full-service sushi restaurant in the Hampden Lane storefront that sat empty after Tako Grill closed in December 2025.
Sushi Masato, owned by Raymond and Amy Yu, begins its soft opening Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 4914 Hampden Lane in The Shoppes of Bethesda, according to MoCo Show. The grand opening is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The space carries history. Tako Grill, a Bethesda fixture since 1988 that spent its final decade at the Hampden Lane location, closed when owner Terry Segawa retired at 70. The restaurant's farewell message thanked customers for "loyalty and support over the years."
Sushi Masato represents a different direction for the address. Where Tako Grill served fast-casual build-your-own bowls, the Yus are building a full-service restaurant anchored by three omakase-inspired tasting menus priced at $58, $78 and $98 per person.
Beyond the tasting menus, the menu includes traditional nigiri and sashimi, specialty rolls like Osaka-Style Pressed Sushi and Coconut Shrimp Roll, and cooked dishes such as Miso Black Cod and Unagi Don. Premium seafood options include toro, salmon belly, uni and ikura. Japanese sake, beer and wine round out the drink list.
The Yus also plan to open a companion concept called The One Cake in the same location. That Japanese-inspired dessert shop would offer mille crepe cakes, handcrafted Japanese-style cakes and soft serve in flavors like matcha and oolong. No opening date has been announced.
In the meantime, dine-in customers can get a preview: Sushi Masato is offering complimentary Hokkaido Fresh Milk Soft Serve through Aug. 31.
