Severe thunderstorms that tore through Montgomery County on Monday, Aug. 10, triggered 467 emergency incidents and displaced a Bethesda family after a tree crashed into their West Cedar Lane home.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service logged 307 EMS calls, 119 fire calls and 41 other incidents that day, according to the department's daily tally. That represented a roughly 30% surge over the 360 calls logged the previous day. The National Weather Service had warned of wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, Bethesda Magazine reported.

Cedar Lane house fire

At approximately 4:25 p.m., MCFRS crews were dispatched to the 5100 block of West Cedar Lane after a tree struck a home and ignited an electrical outlet fire in the basement. MCFRS spokesperson David Pazos confirmed on X that power was de-energized and a family of two adults was displaced. No injuries were reported.

Bethesda homeowner John Edwards told WUSA9 the tree hit a skylight in an upper attic area. "All of a sudden I heard a kabloey and the whole house shook," Edwards said.

Crews extinguished the fire quickly. Edwards and the other occupant evacuated safely.

Burglary on Benalder Drive

Separately, the Montgomery County Police Department's daily calls-for-service summary for Aug. 10, posted Tuesday, listed one 2nd District incident: a residential burglary in the 6000 block of Benalder Drive. Someone forced entry into a home and took property between 6:35 a.m. and 9:48 a.m., according to The MoCo Show.

The 2nd District covers Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Kensington and portions of North Bethesda.

Countywide crime summary

Across the county on Aug. 10, police also reported:

• Three damaged bank ATMs along Rockville Pike and W. Edmonston Drive (1st District)
• Seven catalytic converters stolen from vehicles in the Wheaton and Aspen Hill areas (4th District)
• Two auto thefts in Germantown and Damascus (5th District)
• A business break-in in Silver Spring and a home intrusion on Lockwood Drive where a man fled with property (3rd District)
