Sixth graders at Westland, Pyle, Tilden and two other Bethesda-area middle schools can sign up for fall cross country or slow-pitch softball, the first time in roughly 30 years that MCPS has let its youngest middle schoolers compete on interscholastic teams.

Registration opened Monday, Aug. 10, through the ParentVUE portal. And in spring 2027, those same students will have a new option: flag football, run in partnership with the Washington Commanders.

MCPS Director of Systemwide Athletics Jeff Sullivan told Bethesda Magazine that the district opened eligibility to sixth graders after parents pushed for the change and the district identified gaps in access for underserved students.

"We really kind of looked at the pipeline of sports, the access to sports, and thought, 'You know what, let's open this up for our sixth graders and provide that opportunity,'" Sullivan said.

The pilot covers five middle schools feeding Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Walt Whitman and Walter Johnson high schools: Westland, Silver Creek, Thomas W. Pyle, North Bethesda and Tilden. As we reported Aug. 12, the expansion marks the first time sixth graders have been eligible since MCPS restored middle school sports in the 1996-97 school year.

What's available by season:

• Fall: Coed cross country, boys' slow-pitch softball, girls' slow-pitch softball
• Winter: Boys' basketball, girls' basketball
• Spring: Boys' soccer, girls' soccer, boys' flag football, girls' flag football

The flag football addition builds on MCPS's decision to bring girls flag football to all 25 high schools in fall 2024. Sullivan said interest in the sport has been "skyrocketing and exploding" in Maryland and nationally, and called the middle school pilot with the Commanders a program shift the district is excited about.

Previously, sixth graders were limited to intramural programs held within a single school. Those options will remain for students who prefer a lower-pressure environment or who don't make a team.

Sullivan said the district will evaluate the pilots by examining participation data, roster composition and whether the expansion introduced new opportunities for players. He acknowledged one concern: making sure sixth graders who get cut still come back to try out the following year.

The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 25. Fall athletics begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to MCPS school-level guidance. Students must complete a physical (MCPS Form SR-8) before tryouts or practices.
