Sidwell Friends School has put its 5.5-acre Bethesda campus up for sale, ending a six-decade presence in the neighborhood.
The private Quaker school hired Cushman & Wakefield to sell the property at 5100 Edgemoor Lane, the Washington Business Journal first reported on Friday, Oct. 9. The campus sits 0.4 miles west of the Bethesda Metro station and includes five buildings and athletic facilities.
The sale is part of a long-planned consolidation. Sidwell Friends intends to move all grades, prekindergarten through 12th, to its 15-acre campus on Wisconsin Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., by the 2028-29 school year.
The D.C. expansion is already underway. The former Washington Home building on the Wisconsin Avenue campus opened to Sidwell students in September 2026, according to the Tenleytown & Around neighborhood account on X. Groundbreaking on a new Lower School building was planned for summer 2026, with an opening targeted for September 2028, contingent on fundraising.
Monica Sorensen, a Lower School teacher and co-clerk for faculty input into the new building's design, said on the school's campaign page that the move carries meaning beyond logistics. "Having the Lower School on the DC campus will show the community the full scope of the journey a learner takes at the School," Sorensen said.
The school's Lower School has operated on Edgemoor Lane since 1963, when Sidwell purchased the former Longfellow School for Boys and moved its youngest students there, according to a 2015 Patch report.
The consolidation was first announced in September 2015. The Board of Trustees said it would buy a property called The Washington Home on Upton Street, adjacent to the Wisconsin Avenue campus, to bring all students onto one site for the first time in decades.
The original timeline called for the Bethesda campus to be sold by spring 2016 and leased back until 2019. That schedule slipped by roughly a decade.
To fund the move, Sidwell launched the final phase of its "Together We Shine" campaign in October 2025 with a total goal of $220 million. Of that, $147 million is earmarked for the reunified campus and new Lower School. The campaign is scheduled to conclude in June 2027.
The Bethesda campus includes the Manor House, which holds administration and the Clark Library; the Groome Building with classrooms; a Science, Art, and Music building; a gymnasium; the Bethesda Friends Meeting House; and athletic fields with two playgrounds. No asking price has been publicly confirmed.
Students remain on Edgemoor Lane until the new D.C. building opens, with September 2028 as the target date.
