A North Bethesda woman agreed Tuesday to donate $1,000 to the Montgomery County Police Department after an AI-generated image of a fake intruder in her home triggered an eight-cruiser police response last fall.

Moesha Gardener, 28, reached the agreement in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, according to MoCo Show. She was charged with making a false statement concerning an emergency or crime and making a false statement to a state official concerning a crime. The state will dismiss the case once the $1,000 is transferred within 90 days.

The incident dates to Oct. 8, 2025, when Gardener texted her husband that an unknown man had forced his way into their home in the 5000 block of McGrath Boulevard after she answered the door. Her husband called 911, telling the dispatcher his wife had sent him photos of a man lying on their couch, covered with a blanket.

Eight marked cruisers sped to the home shortly before 10:30 a.m. with sirens blaring and emergency lights activated, WUSA9 reported. Officers expecting a burglary in progress found Gardener sitting alone on her couch, a cell phone mounted to a tripod aimed at the front door. Her husband arrived around the same time as police.

She admitted the image was AI-generated.

Gardener told authorities the messages were intended as a prank. Ten months later, State's Attorney John McCarthy called the donation agreement a fair outcome and warned that social-media pranks carry real consequences.

"People who participate in social media-related pranks need to be aware that there could be unintended consequences," McCarthy said. "In this case, multiple marked police cruisers, with activated emergency lights and sirens, drove at high speeds during daytime traffic to respond to the 911 call. This posed an unnecessary risk to public safety and involved the use of already strained resources."

Assistant State's Attorney Isabella Richardson is prosecuting the case.
