Metro's Red Line shutdown, now in its fifth week, is producing visible results at two stations that matter most to Bethesda-area commuters.

In a progress update posted Sunday, Aug. 9, Metro said crews are building a second mezzanine and new escalators at Bethesda station that will eventually link Metrorail riders directly to the Purple Line light rail. At Grosvenor-Strathmore, workers are reconstructing the platform, replacing slab edges and tiles, adding new lighting and modifying drainage.

A third project is underway between those two stations: maintenance of the elevated rail structure that carries Red Line trains over Rockville Pike between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center.

Why Bethesda's work matters most

The Bethesda station mezzanine is the last major piece of Purple Line construction. In a June bimonthly progress report cited in State Delegate Marc Korman's newsletter, the Maryland Transit Administration said remaining Purple Line construction "is limited primarily to the connection at Bethesda to the WMATA Metro station and miscellaneous final adjustments." That connection is what crews are now building underground.

The Purple Line, roughly 90% complete as of early August, is expected to open in late 2027 or early 2028.

What riders need to know

The shutdown, which began July 6, closes three stations: Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda. No trains run between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights through Sept. 6.

Free shuttle buses, both local and express, replace train service along the corridor. Dedicated bus-only lanes run roughly 7.5 miles along Rockville Pike and Wisconsin Avenue, enforced Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Free parking remains available at North Bethesda and Grosvenor-Strathmore for the duration.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has described the closure as necessary "to complete improvement projects, including the construction of a new mezzanine at the Bethesda station to connect Metro Rail with the Purple Line Light Rail."

Full Red Line service between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights is scheduled to resume Sept. 6.
