Walt Whitman's football team scored 35 first-quarter points and shut out Springbrook 42-0 on Friday, Oct. 2, in Silver Spring.
The Vikings (3-2, 2-0 region) bounced back from a 35-14 loss to Churchill on Sept. 24 by overwhelming the Blue Devils (1-4) on both sides of the ball. Five different players reached the end zone, according to the Black and White, Whitman's student newspaper.
Junior quarterback Lucas Manatos threw two touchdown passes, connecting with senior Sam Greenberg and senior receiver Jack Wills. Senior Zack Worthen returned an interception for a pick-six. Senior quarterback Cade Freund came off the bench and rushed for two scores. Senior John Madikiza added the final touchdown on the ground.
Springbrook's snapping problems fueled the blowout. Whitman recovered multiple fumbles off botched snaps, and the game was effectively over before the second quarter began.
The win extended a pattern for head coach P. Galloway's squad. Whitman's three victories this season have come by a combined 116-14, per MaxPreps, while both losses came against tougher opponents in Blake (25-13 on Sept. 10) and Churchill.
Whitman sits atop its region at 2-0. The Vikings have rotated Manatos and Freund at quarterback throughout the season, with both contributing in the passing and rushing games.
The schedule stiffens Friday. Whitman travels to Montgomery Blair (3-2) for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff in Silver Spring. The Blazers, led by senior quarterback Malachi Rice, routed Einstein 62-6 on Sept. 24 but fell to Bethesda-Chevy Chase 36-50 on Sept. 10.
After Blair, Whitman hosts Paint Branch on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., hosts Walter Johnson on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. and closes the regular-season stretch with a road trip to Bethesda-Chevy Chase on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
