Republican Reardon "Sully" Sullivan has released a new mailer criticizing Democrat Julie Yang's school board record in the County Council District 1 race.
The contrast piece, first reported by Montgomery Perspective columnist Adam Pagnucco on Oct. 26, presents Sullivan's policy positions alongside attacks on Yang's time on the Montgomery County Board of Education. Pagnucco described it as a mailer that "states his case and also assails Yang's record on the school board." The specific claims Sullivan makes about Yang's record were not detailed in the text of Pagnucco's report.
Yang's response to the new mailer is not known as of publication.
The piece marks at least the third mailer Sullivan has sent to District 1 voters in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac. In September, he sent a mailer that cited Pagnucco's writing about a primary-season dispute over Yang and antisemitism. Pagnucco wrote at the time that his column "does not contain the language attributed to me in Sully's mailer," raising questions about how Sullivan's piece characterized his reporting. The underlying dispute involved a Yang primary mailer that quoted a Washington Jewish Week statement praising her work on antisemitism. Washington Jewish Week had endorsed one of Yang's primary rivals, Debbie Spielberg, not Yang.
Sullivan followed in early October with a walk piece, according to Montgomery Perspective. Yang sent a positive general election mailer around the same time. Pagnucco said it was the only county race in which he had seen general election mailers from both a Democrat and a Republican.
Yang has also run a Facebook ad urging voters to "send Trump a message" by supporting her, according to a separate Montgomery Perspective report published Oct. 23.
Yang, a Board of Education member, won the Democratic nomination with about 48.7% of the vote in unofficial results, according to Bethesda Magazine. Sullivan, described in that report as a past chair of the Montgomery County Republican Party, ran unopposed for the GOP nomination. District 1 sits in a heavily Democratic area that includes Rep. Jamie Raskin's congressional district.
Sullivan, a professional engineer, has campaigned on limiting county spending increases to the rate of inflation through a charter amendment petition he chairs. Yang has highlighted education and fighting discrimination, and holds an endorsement from the Maryland State Education Association.
Voters in District 1 head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
