Always Ice Cream is bringing a second Montgomery County shop to Westbard Square in Bethesda, with a spring 2028 opening planned at 5335 Westbard Ave.
The Maryland-based company announced the new location on Oct. 26, according to The MoCo Show. The Westbard Square shop, in Unit B1, will be Always Ice Cream's 11th location overall.
The announcement comes as the company prepares to open its first Montgomery County shop at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda. That location, at 11802 Rockville Pike, is targeting a late November opening.
Always Ice Cream is known for small-batch production, offering more than 200 rotating flavors along with soft serve, handcrafted sundaes, milkshakes, root beer floats, ice cream cakes, and vegan and dairy-free options. Fodor's Travel named it the No. 1 ice cream shop in the country.
The brand is expanding fast. Additional details about the Westbard Square location are expected closer to the spring 2028 opening, according to The MoCo Show.
Westbard Square development
The Westbard Square development has been taking shape since Regency Centers acquired the former Westbard shopping center in 2017. The 23-acre site is becoming a mixed-use destination anchored by Giant Food, according to the Washington Business Journal.
Construction is underway on 100 EYA townhomes and 200 multifamily apartments in a partnership with Greystar. Leasing has begun for retail and restaurant space beneath the residential units.
Our Mom Eugenia has signed on for a freestanding restaurant building at the development. The site's central green space has started hosting community events, and a newly secured beverage service license will allow what the developer calls "sip and stroll" experiences on the grounds.
Once complete, Westbard Square will include retail, residential, office and open space around the Giant Food anchor. The Pike & Rose location's late November opening will give Bethesda-area residents their first taste of Always Ice Cream before the Westbard Square shop arrives in spring 2028.
