Montgomery County police responded to a report of a second-degree assault at Westfield Montgomery Mall on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m., according to Robert Dyer's Bethesda blog.

The incident is the second reported assault at the Bethesda retail center since Westfield began enforcing a 3 p.m. juvenile curfew on Sept. 28. Dyer's blog, which tracks police calls at the mall, counted it as the ninth assault there in 2026.

The first assault since the curfew took effect occurred Oct. 14 at 8:31 p.m. and was related to a shoplifting incident, according to Dyer's earlier report. That brought the 2026 total to eight at the time.

Twelve assaults were recorded at the property in 2025, according to the blog's tally.

Westfield announced the curfew, formally called the "Parental Guidance Policy," in September. Under the policy, visitors younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or supervising adult age 21 or older after 3 p.m. daily. One supervising adult can accompany up to four minors, Bethesda Magazine reported.

Anyone who refuses to comply with or repeatedly violates the policy may be removed from the mall, banned from the property or face a trespassing citation from Montgomery County police, according to the policy.

The curfew followed a July 31 shooting at Westfield Wheaton in which a 13-year-old boy was injured. Montgomery County police charged a 17-year-old from Silver Spring with attempted second-degree murder in that case, Bethesda Magazine reported.

Heather Menis, a public relations representative for Westfield, said in a statement reported by Bethesda Magazine in September that the company had "experienced an increase in disruptive behavior by a small minority of younger visitors."

Montgomery County Police Department has not publicly confirmed details of the Oct. 24 assault at Westfield Montgomery Mall. No information about a suspect or victim has been released.
