Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda has recorded its seventh reported assault of 2026, according to local blogger Robert Dyer, putting the shopping center on pace to surpass last year's total.

Montgomery County police responded to a second-degree assault at the mall at 3:18 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. No details about the circumstances or any arrest have been released.

Seven assaults in roughly eight and a half months already exceed the halfway mark of the 12 reported at the property in all of 2025. The mall also logged 11 assaults in 2024 and 12 in 2022, according to Dyer's earlier tracking. The lowest recent year was 2023, when five assaults were recorded. That year, the Montgomery County Police Department opened a "resource room" at the mall. Dyer tracks publicly reported incidents; the actual count may differ from official police records.

Monday's incident broke a quiet stretch. The previous reported assault occurred June 28, and Dyer noted that county police had "maintained a more visible presence at the mall this summer" in the weeks between.

That stretch ended Monday.

Before the summer lull, assaults had clustered: the June 28 incident was the second in eight days, following one on June 20.

Separately, a 34-year-old man faced armed robbery and assault charges after he allegedly robbed two people at knifepoint in the parking garage near Nordstrom in April, Bethesda Magazine reported. Whether that incident is included in the assault tally tracked by Dyer is unclear.

The Montgomery County Police Department has not commented publicly on the 2026 assault trend or the current status of the resource room program.
