Bethesda-area families with children who have autism or sensory sensitivities will have a dedicated option at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair this summer: a three-hour window on Monday, August 17, when the midway goes quiet.
The fair's Sensory-Friendly Midway Morning, running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature carnival rides and games operating without lights or music. Vendors across the fairgrounds will turn off lights and music whenever possible, and the Pepco Community Stage will offer scheduled performances at lower volume. The public address system will be limited to emergencies and lost-visitor announcements only.
Everyone is welcome during the morning session, not just families with disabilities, according to a report by The MoCo Show's Patrick Herron. The event is a partnership between the Montgomery County Agricultural Center and Powers Great American Midways, the carnival operator.
Families are encouraged to bring noise-canceling headphones and other comfort items.
The nine-day fair runs Friday, August 14, through Saturday, August 22, at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg. This year's theme is "Barn in the USA," and the lineup includes livestock exhibits, youth competitions, Monster Truck Madness, the Red Eye Rodeo and a demolition derby.
Kids 11 and under get in free. Adult admission is $18 at the gate or $13.88 when purchased online in advance, according to KidTown Guide, a family-events listing.
