Kusshi Sushi plans to open a second Bethesda location at 4611-H Sangamore Road, filling the space left by Passion Fin at the Shops at Sumner Place.

The sushi chain will move into the unit next to ATI Physical Therapy at the shopping center, also known as Little Falls Mall. Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer reported on Thursday, Sept. 10, that Passion Fin's space was dark during business hours the previous evening.

"Passion Fin had a successful run by any measure, surviving fourteen years," Dyer wrote.

The Asian bistro and seafood restaurant's Uber Eats listing showed it as closed as of Aug. 12. No formal closure announcement from Passion Fin has surfaced.

Kusshi already operates at 7820 Norfolk Ave. in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle. That restaurant opened in 2008 as Hanaro. Owner Wesley Yao took over in late 2016 and rebranded it to Kusshi in February 2024, according to MoCo Show.

The chain has since grown to eight locations across the Washington region. Beyond the Woodmont Triangle flagship, Kusshi operates at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda, Rockville Town Square, downtown Silver Spring, Arlington's Westpost at National Landing, Glover Park in D.C., Reston Town Center and Tysons Pike 7 Plaza. Its website describes the restaurants as specializing in modern Japanese cuisine, sake and whisky.

The Sumner Place location would be Kusshi's ninth. Dyer noted the shopping center has been adding dining options, calling Kusshi "another example of that."

No opening date for the Sumner Place location has been announced. No permit filings or construction timeline appear in public records.
