The Shake Shack coming to downtown Bethesda won't open on Sept. 17 as planned. The new target is Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Bethesda development blogger Robert Dyer reported the delay on Friday, Sept. 11, saying the opening at 7535 Old Georgetown Road had been pushed back by nearly two weeks. Dyer, who covers retail and development in the area, wrote that "there's been another delay in the opening of the downtown Bethesda Shake Shack."

The restaurant is taking over the former SunTrust bank space on the ground floor of the Element 28 development. Shake Shack secured a nearly $1 million interior build-out permit for the location, The MoCo Show reported in August. The chain also appeared before Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services for a liquor license hearing in June, according to The MoCo Show.

This is the third known target date for the location. A Google listing originally showed a June 24 opening, according to The MoCo Show. That date came and went. By Aug. 18, the opening had slipped again, Dyer reported. An employee at the location told The MoCo Show in August that the restaurant would likely open by the end of summer, which fell on Sept. 22.

Shake Shack has not publicly explained the repeated delays.

As of late July, the interior fit-out appeared complete. Equipment and supplies were being loaded in, with seating and ordering kiosks mostly in place and neon signage lit, drawing passersby to peer through the windows, according to Dyer's blog.

The nearly $1 million build-out and months of visible construction have made the location one of the more closely watched openings along Old Georgetown Road. Once it opens, the downtown Bethesda restaurant will become Shake Shack's fourth in Montgomery County, joining locations in the Kentlands, Westfield Montgomery and Cabin John Village.
