An 18-year-old man was shot in North Bethesda and a Silver Spring driver died in a single-vehicle crash during a weekend that saw Montgomery County police respond to calls across all districts from Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26.
The Montgomery County Police Department released its weekend calls-for-service overview on Monday, with data visualizations showing activity across the county's districts.
North Bethesda shooting
Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched at approximately 6:23 a.m. Sunday, July 26, to the 12200 block of Wilkins Avenue for a report of a group of individuals acting disorderly. Officers found one man with a gunshot wound, MCPD said on X.
Fire and rescue crews reported over radio transmissions that the victim was an 18-year-old man with an abdominal gunshot wound being transported to Suburban Hospital, according to Bethesda Magazine. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening, and the man is expected to recover.
The 12200 block of Wilkins Avenue sits in the North Bethesda area near the Rockville border, in a commercial stretch that includes 7 Locks Brewing and G Street Fabrics.
No suspect has been detained or charged. The investigation remains open.
Fatal crash on New Hampshire Avenue
Earlier that weekend, at approximately 4:39 a.m. Saturday, police and fire personnel responded to the 11800 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring for a single-vehicle collision.
John William Stacey, 28, of Silver Spring, was driving a gray 2010 Mercedes northbound on New Hampshire Avenue when the vehicle struck a median curb near Tracey Drive, left the roadway and hit a tree, according to an MCPD press release. Stacey was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.
New Hampshire Avenue was closed between Nora Drive and Tracey Drive following the crash. The MCPD Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating, and the probe may take several weeks to months to complete.
Bethesda burglaries and auto thefts: July 12–18
The most recent district-level crime breakdown available covers July 12–18 and was released Friday, July 24. In Bethesda's 2nd District during that period, police documented a residential burglary at the 10300 block of Summit Avenue on July 13 with no forced entry, multiple auto thefts in the Pooks Hill Road and Brewer House Circle areas, and a residential garage burglary at the 5900 block of Maplewood Park Place.
MCPD noted that one vehicle stolen from the 5700 block of Brewer House Circle on the night of July 16 had been left unlocked with keys inside. The department urges residents to remove valuables, take car keys and lock car doors.
