Jeffrey Bloch doesn't have a drop of Ukrainian blood. But the Bethesda resident has spent the past seven weeks rallying Marylanders to buy a battle-ready pickup truck for soldiers on the front line.

Bloch is leading the Maryland Battalion campaign, part of a national effort called 50 States for Ukraine that pits states against each other in a friendly fundraising competition. The goal: $13,000 for one armored pickup that will carry Maryland's name before being shipped overseas.

Maryland is halfway there.

As of Friday, Aug. 21, the campaign had collected $6,673.54 from 32 donors, according to the campaign page. The page launched July 4.

The trucks fill a gap that government military aid doesn't cover, Bloch told WTOP reporter Mike Murillo. They're smaller vehicles used to evacuate wounded soldiers and rotate troops at the front, driven in fast and driven out fast.

"I don't have a drop of Ukrainian blood, but let me tell you there's a lot of people I have met through these organizations that are also similar to me, they don't have any Ukrainian connection per se, but are very supportive of Ukraine and want to do what they can to help," Bloch said.

The nonprofit Car for Ukraine purchases pickup trucks no more than 10 years old, modifies them for front-line use and delivers them to military units. Rebecca Boone Wolf, an American volunteer from Arizona now living in Kyiv, handles deliveries on the ground. She told WTOP the soldiers who receive the trucks, painted with the 50 States symbol, feel supported and not forgotten.

Neighboring D.C. and Virginia have already raised enough to fund multiple vehicles each. Nationally, the 50 States for Ukraine campaign has pulled in $587,678 from more than 2,000 donors toward a $1 million goal, with 40 vehicles delivered as of June. Ohio leads all states at more than $69,000 raised.

Maryland's campaign remains active with no posted deadline. Donors who contribute $115 or more receive a collectible Maryland Battalion patch at car4ukraine.com/campaigns/50forua-maryland-battalion.
