Bethesda's two football programs enter Friday, Oct. 16, with matching 4-2 records and something to prove in a pair of pivotal matchups.

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons travel to Blake in Silver Spring. The Walt Whitman Vikings host Paint Branch at home. Both opponents also sit at 4-2, and playoff positioning is at stake.

B-CC at Blake, 6:30 p.m. in Silver Spring

The Barons head south after dismantling cross-town rival Walter Johnson 60-0 on Oct. 9. Junior quarterback Jack Conley rushed for two touchdowns in that game, and reserves finished the fourth quarter after starters checked out with a 54-0 lead, according to the B-CC Tattler.

B-CC pulled off the blowout without injured running backs Aiah Mbayo and Ezekiel Arthur-Amakye. Linebacker JP Ciavola set the tone with a scoop-and-score off a forced fumble, and Daniel Pevzner, Max Randazzo and Tyler Contreras all reached the end zone, the Tattler reported.

Head coach Matt Schwartzback, undefeated against Walter Johnson in three seasons leading the Barons, said after the win: "We played as a team. We played for the name across our chest. We play selfless football, and these kids came in here tonight ready to kick down the door."

The Barons will need that intensity against a Blake squad that beat Magruder 42-15 in Week 6, according to Bethesda Magazine. Blake quarterback Wilt Cameron was flagged as the Bengals' centerpiece in The MoCo Show's preseason rankings. B-CC won last year's meeting 28-13, per Bethesda Magazine.

One wrinkle: B-CC lost to Paint Branch 15-8 the week before the Walter Johnson rout, according to The MoCo Show's Week 6 county rankings. How the Barons handle another strong opponent after that bounce-back will say a lot about their playoff outlook.

Whitman vs. Paint Branch, Friday in Bethesda

Whitman has not beaten Paint Branch since 2016. The Vikings lost the last three meetings, including a 61-0 shutout last season, Bethesda Magazine reported.

The Vikings enter riding a dramatic comeback. Trailing Blair 26-7, Whitman rallied to win 30-26 on Oct. 9 after senior quarterback Cade Freund replaced starter Lucas Manatos, according to The Black & White, Whitman's student newspaper. Freund connected with senior receiver Kiran Collie on a 50-yard touchdown to make it 26-23 entering the fourth quarter, then found Collie again on a back-shoulder throw in the end zone with 20 seconds left for the win.

Paint Branch brings firepower of its own. Senior running back Alijah Bah rushed for two touchdowns in a 55-0 rout of Springbrook in Week 6, per Bethesda Magazine. The MoCo Show's preseason rankings called Bah one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in Montgomery County.

Kickoff times differ by source: Bethesda Magazine lists 7 p.m., while The Black & White reports 6:30 p.m.

What's next

After Friday, B-CC returns home to host Springbrook and then Whitman to close the regular season, both on Thursday nights, per the B-CC Tattler.
