The Bethesda-Chevy Chase girls soccer team beat Whitman 4-0 on Monday, Sept. 28, in the annual Battle of Bethesda rivalry game, posting a shutout behind a three-goal first half.

B-CC led 3-0 at halftime and added a fourth goal after the break, according to The Black & White, Whitman's student newspaper. The Barons' defense did not allow a single goal.

The win moved B-CC to 4-1-1 on the season, good for first place in the Class 4A West II region at 2-0-1, according to MaxPreps. Through six games the Barons have allowed just two goals and scored 11. Whitman dropped to 1-4-1 and a three-game losing streak.

Before kickoff, B-CC players walked onto the field alongside younger athletes from the Soccer of the Future program, a Battle of Bethesda tradition that supports people with cancer. Senior Sofia Mikias told The Tattler, B-CC's student newspaper, that the ceremony adds meaning beyond the rivalry: "The battle of Bethesda game is an especially important game because there's a tradition where we walk out with a bunch of younger soccer players for the Soccer of the Future Program, which is in support of people with cancer."

On the Whitman side, elementary school students ran out with the Vikings at the start of the match.

Senior Leah Ayers said preparation drove the result. Ayers told The Tattler the team worked hard in practices leading up to the rivalry and that the Battle of Bethesda concept gave everyone extra motivation.

The girls' result flipped the script from the boys' Battle of Bethesda match the same night, which Whitman won 2-0.

B-CC hosts Watkins Mill for senior night on Tuesday, Oct. 6, then faces Gaithersburg on Friday, Oct. 9.
