Someone broke into an apartment in the 10500 block of Rockville Pike on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16, took property and was arrested shortly after, according to Montgomery County Police's weekend crime summary for the 2nd District.

The burglary was one of several incidents across the county's six police districts between Friday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 16. The summary, posted by MCPD on X on Monday, Aug. 17, also listed armed assaults, auto thefts, a robbery and a weapons arrest countywide. The previous weekend's police log covered burglaries, a vehicle theft and an assault in the Bethesda area.

Police did not release the suspect's name, charges or a description of the stolen property in the 2nd District case.

Armed incidents across the county

In the 1st District, which includes Rockville and parts of Potomac, a driver reportedly pointed a handgun at another driver following a road rage incident near Veirs Mill Road and Atlantic Avenue on Sunday afternoon. Two vehicles were also stolen there: one from a parking lot in the 12000 block of Rockville Pike and one from a driveway in the 300 block of W. Edmonston Drive.

The 3rd District, covering Silver Spring and White Oak, saw the heaviest activity. Police reported three residential burglaries, three auto thefts, an aggravated assault and an arson. A suspect assaulted a man and pointed a gun at him Saturday afternoon in the 15600 block of Riding Stable Road. Another suspect entered an apartment in the 1200 block of Blair Mill Road and set a fire Saturday night; one person was arrested. A home in the 1600 block of Noyes Drive was burglarized Sunday, also resulting in an arrest.

In the 4th District, suspects displayed a handgun and robbed a man at a bus stop in the 2300 block of Blueridge Avenue. In the 6th District, a suspect pulled a knife on a man during a dispute in the 300 block of N. Frederick Avenue before leaving the scene.

Auto theft surge continues

The weekend's vehicle thefts fit a broader pattern. Montgomery County has seen a 20% increase in auto thefts in 2026 compared to last year, with more than 1,500 reported countywide, according to WJLA. MCPD spokesperson Capt. Cody Fields told WJLA on Aug. 14 that police had arrested more than 90 juveniles and about 45 adults in connection with auto thefts this year. Some of the juveniles are younger than 13.

"We're actively out there," Fields told Montgomery Community Media on Aug. 3. "We're trying to be visible and making sure that despite this being an increased amount of numbers, it's going to be an increased amount of recoveries as well."

Fields told WJLA the surge is partly driven by viral social media videos demonstrating how to exploit vehicle security weaknesses, including methods to defeat key fobs. Stolen vehicles have also been linked to other crimes including burglaries and robberies, according to police.

MCPD noted the weekend summary does not reflect every call for service during the three-day period.
